BEYOND THE NOSE ON YOUR FACE

In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment. You will roll them up like a robe; like a garment they will be changed. But you remain the same, and your years will never end” (Hebrews 1:10-12, NIV).

When I was a kid I used to lay out under the stars just to see how far into the Milky Way I could see. I would squint my eyes, straining to peer into the depths of infinite space. I wanted to be an astronaut, just to get closer to the stars. I’d still be one if I could!

Most of the time we only see the things that are right in front of us. The things that affect our lives “today” because those are things that we need to see in order to take care of business and life as we know it. We look at our families, our jobs, our friends, and what we’re going to do with our weekend.

We think of the things that will occupy our time and attention.

So, how often do we think beyond our time and our attention? Do we ever stop to think in terms of eternity? If we don’t have a handle on the concept of eternity, all we need to do is look up into the vast expanse of deep space on a cloudless night. All we have to do is look at the clock on the wall, knowing that, though the clock will one day stop, the TIME that it is recording will keep advancing forever. After all, what is there to stop the infinity of space? What is there to stop the advancement of time?

On the scale of eternity, our present lives are very short. And, given the reality of the infinite nature of time and space, doesn’t it just make sense that there may more to life than the single generation to which each of us has been assigned?

Of course there is! Our lives are not meant to be futile. Our lives are not to meant to be contained in a few short years. On the contrary, God has planned for us to live in eternity with Him through the power of Jesus Christ!

Our lives here, point to something much greater to come! This is the hope in Christ that the Bible teaches us, over and over and over again. Those that were baptized this past Sunday evening have secured their eternal home with Jesus.
