“WHAT ARE WE DOING TODAY?”

It’s summer! As a kid we just couldn’t wait for summer because there were so many exciting things to do! Fun times we had planned, sleepovers, camp. Now, many years later, I know that when I have my granddaughters over for a visit, the first thing they ask me when they wake up in the morning is, “What are we doing today?”

That’s a great question because summer isn’t the only time when we make plans. Throughout the year we have vacations, business trips, family reunions, etc.

I’m a planner, ask anybody. I love to plan, make lists, etc. I know exactly what I have to do in order to achieve the task I set out to do.

But here’s the thing… do I ask God, “What are we doing today?”

Honestly, the answer is more “no” than “yes.” While it’s easy for me to get all wrapped up in my plans and my tasks, I really don’t want to get so wrapped up in them that I forget the enthusiasm of the little girl I once was to ask, “What are we doing today, God?!” I really DO want to do what God wants me to do. But it’s not always that simple; and I know that.

But I do have a helper – the Holy Spirit. God’s Spirit is always there speaking to me, prompting me, letting me know what His plans are for me. Here’s one of my favorite verses:

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11 NIV). Whether the prosperity comes now, later, or in the next life, I don’t know. But what I DO know is that sooner or later God WILL deliver on His promise. I live in that hope.

He has called me/us to be part of His plan which is The Great Commission. “He said to them, ‘Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation’” (Mark 16:15 NIV). See, God wants everyone to live with the same hope that He has promised you, me, and everyone that believes in Him.

As we go do all those fun things for ourselves this summer; let’s never forget what God’s plans are as well.
