What Can the Righteous Do?

“When the foundations are being destroyed, what can the righteous do?” (Psalm 11:3)

I can’t get that question out of my head! I’ve been reading through the Psalms in my early morning prayer time and Psalm 11 has stopped me in my tracks. I keep hearing those words over and over in my mind and asking the Lord, “What can the righteous do?” What can I do?”

Do you find yourself asking that question these days? The “foundations are being destroyed” and everything we hold dear seems to be crumbling around us, but what can the righteous do? What can I do?”

Psalm 11 was written by David, a fugitive on the run who lived under the constant threat of danger from his enemy, King Saul. His friends advised him to, “Flee like a bird to your mountain” (Ps. 11:1), because everywhere you look there are enemies lurking in the shadows with arrows aimed straight for your heart. There was real danger everywhere, and David had cause to be afraid for his life. King Saul wanted him dead! But, amid real danger David found courage and strength in the one place his enemy feared to look. “In the Lord I take refuge,” David proclaimed, “how then can you say to me: Flee like a bird…” (Psalm 11:1).

When “the foundations are being destroyed,” what can the righteous do?

We can remember!

“The Lord is in his holy temple; the Lord is on his heavenly throne.

He observes everyone on earth; his eyes examine them…

For the Lord is righteous, he loves justice;

The upright will see his face.”  (Psalm 11:4,7)

David encourages us in Psalm 11 to run to the only place our enemy fears to look. So, take refuge in Jesus this week and don’t forget to remember, “the upright will see his face.”

That’s what the righteous can do!

Have a wonderful week, my friends. God is with you!
