WEEKLY WORD – SALT OF THE EARTH (12/1/20)

You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot” (Matthew 5:13).

I was thinking today… We are to be the salt of the earth. What are the benefits of salt? Here are a few things I found. It’s used as a preservative, it balances fluid and helps in other areas of our body, it has medicinal/healing properties (I know I have gargled many times with warm salt water for a sore throat!), and it brings out flavor in food.

So, if we are to be the salt of the earth, we are to preserve God’s word and Jesus’ teachings and share it with others. We are to help others and comfort those who are hurting and show them God’s love. We are to be an example of Jesus here on earth and sprinkle our “salt” everywhere we go to make peoples’ lives better.

I also learned salt can lose its saltiness or potency if it is diluted with water or mixed with impure elements. So, to not lose our saltiness we need to be careful not to become too diluted by the troubles and impurities of this world, and to stay focused on God and His goodness.

I found three Scripture verses referring to the covenant of salt in the bible. I never noticed it before; I never even knew there was such a thing!

  • Leviticus 2:13 – in reference to grain offerings
  • Numbers 18:19 – in reference to the Priesthood
  • 2 Chronicles – 13:5 – in reference to King David and his sons

I have to say it has been an interesting journey that God has put me on with the topic of salt. He has shown me more than I ever thought I would find… which why I keep digging deeper every day!

To God be the Glory,
