In my 38 years of corporate life, I cannot tell you how many seminars and events I’ve attended where there was a speaker that was there to motivate, equip, and teach the folks in the audience how be better sales people, better entrepreneurs, and better leaders. I even have a masters degree in leadership.
But here’s the thing… according to world renown business guru Michael Porter, all this motivation, equipping, and things we’ve been taught means absolutely NOTHING unless we put what we’ve learned into ACTION!
How many of us are willing to look inward for the truly honest answers to these questions:
“Do I live out my faith daily?”
“Does my lifestyle reflect Christ?”
“Do I make decisions based on God’s teaching rather than on my own desires?”
We come to church, we read our Bibles, we pray… we let God motivate us, equip us through His Word, and teach us through the Holy Spirit, but then we take NO ACTION to CHANGE our way of thinking from what “LIFE” has taught us to what GOD has taught us.
Let’s face it. Human beings are Resistant to Change! We find great comfort by depending on what we know (or what we think we know). We put more faith in our life experiences than we do our faith in our Creator. We are great listeners, but so often we are terrible DO-ers!
Jesus found this quality in the Pharisees. They accurately taught God’s Word, but they failed at being examples of what they taught. Jesus called them hypocrites.
For example, we can tell people all about forgiveness, yet hold a hardened heart against them. We can tell people about God’s love, yet despise them because they don’t agree with us. We can give countless examples of how Jesus taught us to serve each other, yet we hide behind closed doors, lest someone in need ask for help. We can tell people how Jesus is our Savior, yet live a lifestyle that promotes our desires rather than His desires for us.
Jesus said, “For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for Me will find it” (Matthew 16:25).
If you consider yourself a follower of Jesus Christ, then once upon a time you gave your life to Him. Why then, didn’t we give Him ALL of our lives? Everything that we used to be to become everything He wants us to be? The answer… we are Resistant to Change.
When do we decide, like Michael Porter might suggest, to take ACTION, to DO what we told Jesus we were going to do with our lives when we handed Him the keys to our souls? When are we going to actually take a STEP outside of our comfort zone and break away from our worldly behaviors and ideas and take a chance through the Faith that we profess?
When I was in high school I decided to change the oil in my car. I had never done that before. I was afraid I’d get in over my head, take something apart that I wouldn’t be able to put back together. A friend told me how easy it was. After six months of procrastination, and a smelly crank case, I finally decided “today’s the day” and I changed the oil. Turns out that it was VERY easy! Within the next six months I had completely rebuilt the entire engine.
I took a chance with what I had been taught. I stepped out of my comfort zone and a new world was opened up to me. I had taken ACTION.
Let’s do this, please. As we consider taking a STEP of faith to represent Jesus to a world that so desperately needs Him, let’s pray that He will give us the strength and resolve to DO this – and let’s pray this same thing for Each Other, too! There is strength in numbers and there is power in prayer. Pray. Love. GO!
God bless you all, and we hope to see you Sunday!
